Information

This rare “tower-eye” trilobite is exceptionally prepared, revealing perfectly preserved compound eye facets in both eyes and dozens of delicate, free-standing spines. The level of preparation and preservation is truly top-tier, small but nice specimen.

Trilobites of the genus Erbenochile are among the most visually extraordinary arthropods of the Devonian, renowned for their remarkable tower-like compound eyes. Each eye is composed of hundreds of individual lenses (over 400), forming a sweeping dome that provided an exceptional field of vision. These elevated eye structures likely allowed the trilobite to observe its surroundings in near 360°, even looking backward over its body — a significant evolutionary advantage in predator-rich marine environments.
